MELITA COUTA
Info
Melita Couta is a contemporary artist born in Cyprus. Over the past 25 years, Couta’s artistic practice has evolved into a multidisciplinary approach encompassing a large body of work in the visual arts (sculpture, installation, and new media), performing arts (scenography, site-specific, and devised performances), and socially engaged arts (community projects), along with academic teaching and research. Her artistic research investigates the narrative construction of histories, memories, and personal and collective identities within contested spaces. It explores a shift from fixed and conflicted identities to those open to interpretation and porous. This reimagining of the past, and by extension, the present, fosters open spaces for rethinking the self and the other, alternative perspectives, and multilayered readings. Her material often draws from her biography and locality, empowering her to examine narrative constructions through a personal visual language. Her work unfolds around the human and animal presence and the body as performative and mythopoetic material, objects found, copied, or made as carriers of memories, histories, and meaning and territories as multi-temporal and multi-layered topoi with transitory geographical references, fluid and ever-changing.
